At the Center for International Environmental Law, expand the organization’s capacity to use creative visual communications across a wide range of products. I created CIEL’s first definitive brand guide, defining the use of our visual identity across our logo, colors, typography, imagery, and more. I’ve designed dozens of publications and established an organized taxonomy for their differing uses. I lead the design direction of our yearly annual report and accompanying website. I create designed templates for use by the communications team and coordinate with outside consultants and vendors to create illustrations or sustainably made merchandise that align with our identity. By all these means, I expand the design coherence of CIEL and support our ability to use the power of law to protect the environment, promote human rights, and ensure a just and sustainable society.

Since the start of 2022, myself, with the support of the larger Communications department, have worked to refine CIEL’s brand identity. With a minimal visual language, expressing the intricate knowledge of CIEL’s lawyers and campaigners, our work seeks to change the landscape of environmental law. Often seeking to amplify the voices of frontline defenders, Indigenous peoples, and those most impacted by climate harms; CIEL’s visuals take a backseat to our efforts.

Publications encompass nearly a third of my work at CIEL. During my time with the organization, I have refreshed our visual approach by creating templates that organize different types of publications into a cohesive taxonomy and have spearheaded the creative direction for all publications released from June 2022 onward.

Often used as assets for staff or gifts for donors, creating branded collateral for CIEL is anchored by sustainable efforts. The use of recycled or deadstock materials, vetting factories for ethical work conditions, and considering use cases for all produced assets to avoid waste; CIEL’s products seek to spread our ideals with the least environmental impact possible.

CIEL’s annual report is a snapshot of the organization’s progress, visualizing victories big and small, while expressing the current standing of our staff and financials. For this, I lead the design of a flagship publication distributed to all of of CIEL’s supporters.
