Overview

Since the start of 2022, myself, with the support of the larger Communications department, have worked to refine CIEL’s brand identity. With a minimal visual language, expressing the intricate knowledge of CIEL’s lawyers and campaigners, our work seeks to change the landscape of environmental law. Often seeking to amplify the voices of frontline defenders, Indigenous peoples, and those most impacted by climate harms; CIEL’s visuals take a backseat to our efforts.

About CIEL

Since 1989, CIEL has used the power of law to protect the environment, promote human rights, and ensure a just and sustainable society.

CIEL Values

Equity and justice require an intersectional approach.

We know that only byaddressing the root causes of overlapping systems of oppression can we hope to achieve our vision.



People already have and hold power.

We work to expand that power

through more inclusive participation, increased transparency, and access to remedy – the pillars of environmental democracy.

By holding states and corporations accountable, we counterbalance the harmful concentration of power that drives human rights violations and environmental harms.

Logo

The CIEL Logo consists of 2 arrangements and 3 color categories:


Stacked and Horizontal


Full color, Light, and Dark




Primary Logo

Full Color


The full color stacked versions of the logo should be the first considered in all use cases. This version should only be placed on a pure white, or off-white (hex #f0ebe1) background.



Light and Dark


When high color contrast or background imagery affects the readability of the full color logo, it is appropriate to use the light or dark versions.




Secondary Logo

Horizontal


The horizontal version of the logo should be used secondary to the stacked version, when the stacked version is inadequate.

The same color rules apply.




Size and Spacing

Stacked Logo

Don't place the logo smaller than 250 pixels wide.



Horizontal Logo


Don't place the logo smaller than 450 pixels wide.

Leave empty space around the logo proportionate to the ‘C’ in CIEL.



Typography

CIEL uses two primary typefaces, Plus Jakarta Sans and Literata.

Guiding Principles

Showcase casual participation in environmentalism.

Highlight the optimism surrounding climate solutions by visualizing the world we want to see.

Showcase the diversity, power, and energy of climate activism.

When portraying environmental concerns, emphasize accurate representation.

Certain images can be further styled by incorporating a CIEL blue duotone effect, while accentuating the focal point in full color.
